When a tree is harvested, the whole tree is used in some way. The different parts are used according to the highest possible refinement value for each part.
The thickest part of the trunk becomes timber for houses and furniture. The thinner part is used for pulp and then made into paper, paperboard and textiles. The branches and tops, along with residual flows from the forest industry, go into products such as bioenergy, biofuels and other chemicals.
